How does the animatronic visualiser work?

You tell Hal, our design assistant, what you want made. A priced brief fills in on the left as you answer, and the centre draws an approximate scale drawing of your moving piece beside a 1.80 m person. You can change your answers and see the budget move as you go. No 3D model is made on this page.

Is the budget on the animatronic page a quote?

No. It is an indicative band, shown excluding VAT, so you can judge whether the project is in the right place before you commit anything. Final cost depends on size, finish, quantity, delivery and installation. The studio checks the figure and confirms it within two days.

What if the budget is higher than I planned for moving piece?

Type in the budget you have. The tool proposes the smallest changes to scope that bring the project to it, and applies them to what you see on screen. You get a lower specification for your money, not the same thing for less.

I already have a quote from someone else. Can you compare?

Yes. We do not match prices, but we will go through a written quote line by line against our scope so you can see what each includes. If you need to pay less, we offer a version at your figure with a clearly stated scope.

What happens after I finish with Hal?

You can save the project to an account, book a call, forward it to a colleague or download the pack. If you go ahead, drawings come first and you approve them in writing before anything is made.

What is an animatronic?

A figure or object that moves by itself using a mechanism, often a creature or character. Motion Room covers animatronics and kinetic mechanisms.

Can an animatronic be made to my design?

Yes. Describe it to Hal and the priced brief covers the form and the movement you want. The studio then engineers the mechanism, and you approve the drawings before anything is made.

What is a kinetic sculpture?

A sculpture designed to move, through motors, wind or mechanism. We build them as commissions for spaces, windows and displays.

Can a window display move?

Yes. Moving window displays and mechanical displays are made so a product or scene animates for passers-by.

Do you make the skin and the mechanism?

Yes. Sculpting and finishing come from Prop Room and the mechanism from Motion Room, so one brief covers the whole piece.

How is a moving piece priced?

By size, number of movements, finish and quantity. Hal asks what should move and how, and the indicative budget builds from the answers.

What kinds of moving piece can you make?

A figure or mechanism for a shop window, a kinetic sculpture, a hero piece for a launch or event, or a character or animal figure. Movement runs from one simple turn or wave, through two or three movements together, to a face that talks or reacts and a whole character that performs.

Can you make an animatronic dinosaur or dragon?

A character or animal figure is one of the first briefs Hal asks about. Tell it the size, how the figure should move and where it will stand, and the priced brief builds from there.

How does the piece start and stop?

It can run on its own loop, start from a button or a sensor, move in time with sound and light, or be driven live by a person. Control and programming are part of what Motion Room makes, so the behaviour you choose is built into the piece.

How long can it run, and how quiet is it?

The mechanism is engineered to keep running through a long day, and quiet enough not to spoil the moment. Hal asks whether it runs for a few moments on cue, a few hours a day, all day or day and night, and how long it must keep working, from one event to five years or more.

Can people touch it?

That changes the design. Hal asks whether nobody can reach it, only staff, the public or children within reach, and builds to suit. A piece that children can reach is made and tested differently from one behind glass.

Where can it stand?

Indoors, in a lit shop window, outdoors under cover, outdoors exposed, or somewhere damp or humid. Each needs a different construction and finish, so tell Hal early.

How does a moving piece run from brief to install?

You describe what should move and a priced brief builds. The studio engineers the mechanism, drawings are approved by you in writing, and the piece is made at the factory, finished and bench-tested. It is then packed and shipped, and installed and set running by us, or with your crew supervised.

Who looks after it once it is running?

Choose nothing needed, your own team with spare parts, maintenance visits from us, or repair on call. The piece is built with that in mind.

How long does a moving piece take?

Longer than a static one, because the mechanism is engineered and then tested on the bench before it ships. A simple single movement takes weeks, and a performing character takes longer. Tell Hal the date and we say plainly whether it is realistic.

What do I get at the end?

A priced brief and drawings you approve in writing, the finished moving piece with its control and programming, installed and running where you asked, with the care arrangement you chose.
