Stillroom.Creative agency

Most of what a brand sells is made in stages by companies that never meet. That is where the idea thins out. Here the people who sketched it are still on the job the day it launches.

Questions

Questions about Stillroom Creative

Short answers to the questions people ask before they send a brief, grouped by topic. Each answer stands on its own, so you can read them in any order.

The company

What is Stillroom Creative and what does it do?

Stillroom Creative is a creative agency and marketing agency with its own production floor. It takes an idea from strategy and design, through prototypes and the physical build, to the film, print, web, stands and events that launch it. The work is organised in nineteen rooms grouped as Think, Make and Sell.

What does Stillroom Creative do for a brand?

Stillroom Creative's rooms cover strategy and identity, prototypes, packaging, props, sets, animatronics, themed spaces, factory and fit-out builds and production runs, then film, print, social, websites and e-commerce, displays, shop fits, exhibition stands, activations and events.

What is the website address of Stillroom Creative?

The website is stillroomcreative.com. It carries the nineteen rooms, the Factory page, the Insights buying guides, the free tools Name Bench and Concept Visualiser, and this page of questions. The contact address is info@stillroomcreative.com.

Is Stillroom Creative a marketing agency or a production company?

Stillroom Creative is a marketing agency with its own production floor, so it runs the strategy, branding and campaigns and makes the physical work as well.

Where is Stillroom Creative, and can I visit the factory?

The studio and the production floor are in the UK, at the registered office shown on the Companies House record for company 16956533. Once you have approved the drawing you can come and watch your job being cut, sculpted, fabricated and sprayed, a short walk from the desk it was drawn on.

Who will I deal with at Stillroom Creative?

Hal, an automated assistant, takes the first brief on the site. A person at the studio reads every brief and replies within two working days, and the people who drew and built the job are the people who fit it.

Does Stillroom Creative charge VAT on its prices?

Yes. Budgets on the site are shown excluding VAT, and VAT is added to every quotation and invoice at the standard UK rate.

How do I contact Stillroom Creative about a job?

Write to info@stillroomcreative.com, use the form on the home page, or open a room page and tell Hal what you are making. A sketch, a photograph or two lines about the thing is enough to start.

Where can I find Stillroom Creative on social media?

Stillroom Creative is on LinkedIn as stillroom-creative, on Instagram as @stillroomcreative and on YouTube as @stillroomcreative. The rooms, the tools and the guides live on the website, stillroomcreative.com.

How a job runs

How do I start a job with Stillroom Creative?

Send a sketch, a photograph, or two lines about what it is, or open the room that matches the job and answer Hal's questions. A priced brief fills in as you answer, in about seven minutes, and a person at the studio replies within two working days.

Can I hire just one room, or bring a finished design?

Yes to both. A room takes work on its own, however small, for you or for the agency running your project. A finished drawing can go straight to the floor, and if the brief grows, the other rooms pick it up.

What happens after I send a brief to Stillroom Creative?

A person at the studio reads it and replies within two working days. You can save the project to an account, book a call, forward it to a colleague or download the pack. If you go ahead, drawings come first and you approve them in writing before anything is made.

Do I approve the drawings before anything is made?

Yes. You approve the drawing in writing before anything is cut, and it is the only drawing the floor works from. When something on the floor does not work, the drawing changes before the material does.

Is the budget shown on a room page a quotation?

It is an indicative band, shown excluding VAT, so you can judge whether the project is in the right place before you commit anything. Final cost depends on size, finish, quantity, delivery and installation. The studio checks the figure and confirms it within two days.

What if the budget shown is higher than I planned for?

Type in the budget you have. The tool proposes the smallest changes to scope that bring the project to it, and applies them to what you see on screen. You get a lower specification for your money, not the same thing for less.

I already have a quote from another company. Can Stillroom Creative compare it?

Yes. Stillroom Creative does not match prices, but will go through a written quote line by line against its own scope so you can see what each includes. If you need to pay less, you get a version at your figure with a clearly stated scope.

Does one company doing design and build make a project more expensive?

You pay one company for the design and the build, and nobody charges you to interpret another firm's drawing.

Will Stillroom Creative work for an agency that is running the client's project?

Yes. A room takes work on its own, however small, for you or for the agency running your project, and a finished drawing can go straight to the floor.

Does Stillroom Creative work outside the UK?

Yes. Jobs go from the UK and Europe to the Middle East and North America, and the brief carries the freight, duty and tax, and installation.

How long does a job take at Stillroom Creative?

Weeks for a small job or a printed part, and longer for a large build with screens, lighting, fine detail or moving parts. The drawings you approve set the pace, and a show build-up or a launch date does not move. Tell Hal the date and the studio says plainly whether it is realistic.

What should I send to start a job?

The floor plan and the organiser's rules are the best start for a stand, and CAD files, drawings or photographs for a model or a prop. With none of those, describe the thing to Hal and the studio builds the model from your description.

Is what I tell Hal kept private?

Your brief is used for this project and nothing else. If you talk to Hal, your voice goes to the speech provider so he can answer, no audio is kept, and a written transcript is kept for 88 days. The privacy page lists everything the site records.

Can I save a project on stillroomcreative.com and come back to it?

Yes. You can save the project to an account, forward it to a colleague or download the pack, and start a fresh brief whenever you like.

The factory

What can the Stillroom Creative factory make?

Wood, metal, foam, fibreglass, paint and wiring all happen on its own production floor. The trades are production drawing, 3D scanning, 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, carpentry, cabinet making, turning, sculpting, tooling and mould making, fibreglassing, prop making, metalwork, structural construction, technical spray painting, scenic painting, upholstery, animatronics, electrics and lighting, and installation.

What machines are on the Stillroom Creative production floor?

CAD workstations, a 3D scanning kit, 3D printers, a three-axis CNC router, a five-axis CNC for large forms in polystyrene and foam, a laser cutter and engraver, panel and table saws, a planer and thicknesser, a spindle moulder, bandsaws, lathes, metalwork equipment, a prop shop, an animatronics and electrics bench, a 2K spray shop, and dust and fume extraction across the floor.

Who installs the finished work on site at the venue?

Stillroom Creative's own crews take the job to site, out of hours or into a live shop, put it up and hand it over. The people who built it are the people who fit it. For a stand you can also build it with your own team, or have Stillroom Creative supervise your team.

Does Stillroom Creative build to an organiser's or venue's rules?

Yes. Organisers set rules on height, materials and paperwork. Give Hal the technical manual if you have it and the drawings follow it, and if you do not, say so and the question is settled first.

Can Stillroom Creative ship and install what it makes?

Yes. Packing, freight, duty and tax, and installation are lines in the brief, for the UK, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Can a stand or a set be stored between shows?

Yes. Say whether it is not needed again, needed for a few months, or needed long term. A stand that will be used again is built to come apart and go back together.

Can Stillroom Creative make a production run, not only a one-off?

Yes. Projectroom runs the production of your product, checks every unit against the approved sample, and one person answers for all of it. Tooling, moulds, jigs and drawings are kept, so a repeat run comes back faster.

Can I get a prototype before paying for production tooling?

Yes, that is a common reason to come to Modelroom. A prototype or pre-production sample is in your hand before the cost of production tooling is spent, so you can test the fit and the feel and change what needs changing.

Does Stillroom Creative 3D scan and 3D print?

Yes. Existing objects, faces and spaces are scanned and modelled from the scan, for copies, repairs, redesign or scale models. 3D printing makes components, patterns and small repeat parts, often the fastest route from a drawing to something you can hold.

Hal and the free tools

What is Hal on the Stillroom Creative website?

Hal is an automated assistant. On a room page he asks the questions, by voice or typed, and fills in your brief as you answer; the budget beside it is an indicative band, and a person at the studio confirms it. Tell him what you are making and he points you to the right room.

What does a room page on stillroomcreative.com show me?

A priced brief fills in as you answer Hal, and the page draws your job to scale beside a 1.80 m figure with the budget beside it. You can change your answers and watch the budget move, then save, forward or download the pack.

What is Name Bench and what does it check?

Name Bench is a free name check at namebench.stillroomcreative.com. Before you fall for a company or product name, it checks whether the domain, the handle, the company and the trade mark are taken, and how the name sounds in 14 languages.

What is the Concept Visualiser from Stillroom Creative?

The Concept Visualiser is a free tool at visualiser.stillroomcreative.com. Upload a photo of your space, say what you sell and who buys it, and see the space reimagined before anything is built.

Are the tools on stillroomcreative.com free to use?

Yes. Name Bench, the Concept Visualiser and the room pages cost nothing to use. Saving a project needs an account, and a person at the studio confirms any budget before it becomes a quotation.

What does the Buildroom at Stillroom Creative build?

Stillroom Creative's Buildroom takes on factory construction and fit-out for production businesses, design and build for creative and production spaces, and the mechanical and electrical (M&E) work for retail and shopfit projects.

Does the Buildroom at Stillroom Creative act as main contractor?

Yes. Stillroom acts as main contractor and project manages the whole build, trades and M&E included, so one team answers for the programme from the first drawing to handover.

Can one team design and build the same space at Stillroom Creative?

Yes. The Buildroom designs the layout and builds it, so you deal with one team for the drawings, the construction and the handover, and nobody has to interpret another firm's plans.

Does the Buildroom do the M&E for a shop fit-out?

Yes. Power, lighting, heating and ventilation are planned with the shop layout and coordinated with the Shoproom's joinery, so the services are in place when the fit-out is ready to open.

Can I bring my own drawings or layout to the Buildroom?

Yes. A finished drawing or layout can go straight into build, and where the brief grows, the other rooms pick up the rest, from the shop fit to the signage and the launch.

Does Stillroom Creative design and build exhibition stands?

Yes. Standroom designs, builds and installs exhibition stands, hall rules included: a one-off stand, a reusable modular one, an upgrade of a shell scheme, an island, or a booth with meeting rooms, for shows in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Does Stillroom Creative make hero props and oversized replicas?

Yes. Proproom makes hero props finished on the side the camera never sees: oversized replicas, characters and volume prop runs, sculpted, moulded, cast and assembled, then finished by hand.

Does Stillroom Creative build sets for shoots?

Yes. Setroom builds sets for your shoot, ready when the camera is, with scenic painting for the texture, ageing and patina that reads on camera and up close.

Does Stillroom Creative make prototypes and scale models?

Yes. Modelroom makes a prototype of your bottle before anyone pays for tooling, and scale and presentation models, working prototypes, pre-production samples, 3D scans and 3D printed parts, from palm sized to larger than a table.

Does Stillroom Creative design and make packaging and gift sets?

Yes. Packroom makes packaging and gift sets tough enough for the courier, with the moulds, jigs and fixtures to make them five times or fifty times to one standard.

Does Stillroom Creative build animatronics and moving figures?

Yes. Motionroom builds animatronics that run all day without the motor giving them away: mechanisms, motion and embedded electronics, built to be serviced so the moving part still moves at the end of the run.

Does Stillroom Creative build themed attractions and immersive worlds?

Yes. Themeroom builds themed attractions and immersive worlds for a season of crowds, with fibreglass shells, five-axis cut forms, scenic paint and the electrics wired in on the floor.

Does Stillroom Creative build pop-ups and shop fits?

Yes. Shoproom builds pop-ups and shop-in-shops, open by a date nobody can move, with the counters, display furniture and spray finishes made on its own floor and fitted by the people who built them.

Does Stillroom Creative make retail displays and window displays?

Yes. Displayroom makes counter units and window displays still standing at closing time, including the lettering, gilding and hand-finished details that make a window worth stopping for.

Does Stillroom Creative run brand activations and events?

Yes. Activationroom runs brand activations that take a city square and leave no trace, and Eventroom runs events with your producer there until the last guest leaves.

Does Stillroom Creative produce film, photography and CGI?

Yes. Filmroom makes films, photos and CGI of your product, even before it exists, so the launch can be shown while the thing is still being made.

Does Stillroom Creative print large-format graphics?

Yes. Printroom prints large-format graphics to fit the stand they hang on: wall and floor graphics, hanging banners and counter fronts.

Does Stillroom Creative run social media campaigns and build websites?

Yes. Socialroom runs social media campaigns, one idea across every post, and Webroom builds websites and e-commerce, where customers turn your product over in 3D.

Does Stillroom Creative build e-commerce websites and online shops?

Yes. Webroom builds online shops on Shopify and similar platforms, with product listings, marketplace presence and product photography for the shop, alongside brand websites. It is e-commerce we run as well as build: Aichabelle is a salon and beauty brand's online shop, and Wooden Balls Co is a product shop selling turned wooden balls worldwide.

Does Stillroom Creative do brand strategy, naming and identity?

Yes. Strategyroom does positioning, a launch plan and a name your customers can spell, and Brandroom does identity, product design and graphics readable at label size.

Buying guides

How much does an exhibition stand cost?

It comes down to the floor space you have booked, what the stand is built from, and how many shows it has to do. The guide Exhibition stand design cost: what sets the price sets out what drives the number and what a design fee covers, and the Standroom page shows an indicative band for your own brief.

What is the difference between an advertising agency and a creative agency?

Today they are mostly the same kind of business: the one that has the idea and makes the work. The job that split away is media, deciding where the money goes and buying the space, which now sits largely with specialist media agencies. The guide Advertising agency or creative agency: the difference shows which to brief for which job.

Should I use a website design agency, a freelancer or an in-house team?

Choose an agency when the build needs several skills at once and you cannot spare the time to manage it, a freelancer when the site is simple and you can, and in-house only when the site changes so often that a salary costs less than the invoices. The guide Website design agency, freelancer or in-house weighs the three routes.

What does a brand strategy consultancy deliver?

Four things: a position someone could disagree with, the evidence behind it, a way of making decisions with it, and a shelf life longer than your next campaign. The guide What a brand strategy consultancy delivers tells strategy work from a rebrand with a new invoice.

How big should a giant bottle display be?

The right size is the one your visitors can take in from where they will stand, and that your venue can let in. Start from the real bottle, pick a multiplier, and test the result against eye level, viewing distance and the door it has to get through. The guide Giant bottle display size shows the arithmetic from a 14.5 cm bottle.
